Xpress Pro Mike Swauger edition review by rcracing.com

A few years ago, Xpress came out with their first Sedan. If I remember right, a month or so after the car came out, it dominated it’s first big race at Revelation’s in LA. I remember everyone was amazed with the car and for a while it was the hottest car around. Xpress can come a ways since their first sedan, let’s check out what the newest one has for us! ;)

DAY 1 (assembly):
I opened up the box to find a car that was already 90% assembled!!! All I had to do the get the car ready to run was build the shocks, and install the electronics. I called Mr. Xpress himself (Mike Swauger) and got the setup from him. The first thing I was to do was take the sway bars off front and rear, he said that he only uses them on carpet. Second thing was change the shock positions, that’s easy enough eh? Mike said since the car comes with Diff’s (instead of one-ways’), you should set the car up a little stiffer. I decided to go with the 3 hole pistons with 60wt in the front and 50wt in the rear, and Yokomo Orange springs all the way around. According to Mike, if you are to run one-ways, run the 3 hold pistons with 40wt in the front and 30wt in the rear with Picco’s short baby blues in the front and the Yokomo TC Yellows in the rear.

MVC-392X

After the shocks were done I started on the electronics. My test equipment was:

LRP V7.1 ESC
KO Propo KR-297FZ receiver (comes with the Mars)
KO Propo Mars 97R Radio
Airtronics 94157 Steering Servo
Orion TOP Chrome 9×2

Installing the electronics was no problem. The only thing that I had to do was file down the top plate just a hair because the Airtronics servo was a little too big to fit in the slot.

Setting the Xpress up is SUPER easy with the threaded shocks and set-screw down stops. To start off, Mike said to run about 4.5mm of ride height front and rear, with about 2mm of down travel and 1mm in the front. I set the camber to -1 degree all the way around, set the tweak, and I was ready to hit the track!

The Assembly of the Xpress was extremely painless! During the setup of the car, I noticed that the Pre Built Diff’s were as smooth as glass and adjusted PERFECTLY! All the arms dropped freely with a practically no slop anywhere in the car.

DAY 2 (at the track): Mike and headed up to Speedworld Raceway to run the car during the week. I charged a few packs, threw on Yokomo’s 138G, and headed out on the track. After getting the steering straight etc etc. I took a few slow laps just to kinda get used to it. One thing that I could see was the EXTREMELY free driver train, the car had FLAT OUT horseys! For the first battery on the track I was very impressed, the rear end was lacking a little traction coming out of corners. I moved the rear camber link on the shock tower to the lowest hole, threw in another pack and the car was dialed.. The car has quite a bit of steering but the rear end stays planted, it’s also very stable under breaking. Even if you are entering a turn a little hot, the car will stay straight if you lightly tap the brakes.

All in all, the Xpress pro is Cheep (around $220.00), 90% pre built, and can be competitive with VERY few hop ups. Looking at Swaugers car, some other small hop-ups include a Kimbrough 96T 48pitch Spur gear, Tamiya white Servo Saver, and the Springs. The Only thing that I could see which required any modifying was the top plate for the Servo (which you only have to do for Airtronics servo’s may I add).

Feel Free to Mail Me if you have any question!

Special Thanks Mike Swauger for all the help with the car, Mr. & Mrs. Mok for the Xpress Pro Kit, and Billy Bowerman from Speedworld for letting us run the car there! THANKS again to you all from RCRacing.com!! =)

Introduction:
What is this? A 4WD 1:24th scale! However, I suppose that it is the first time for you to hear about the co-existence of these two words. 4WD is widely employed nowadays in 1:10th scale or any bigger scale model car. Without a doubt, 1:24th scale is the hottest topic in R/C field since the introduction of the Kyosho(r) Mini-Z(tm). Therefore, at this time, we will put our sight to focus on this new dominance The Mini-X(tm)!

Some background:
Mini-X(tm) is designed and produced by Sun Sun Model(r) since the March 2001. Needless to say, they have their know-how in engineering by producing the ever-popular Xpress(tm) 1:10th scale since the last decade. In any open racing, it is not unusual to find racer using this brand name product. Their experience and expertise has been proven to be successful, so let’s go take a closer look to this hot new dish!

Weight:

Body Set Weight (100g) with ESC & Rx (135g) Total Weight (185g)

 Overview:

Basically, Mini-X(tm) is categorized into the same class of mini car like the Mini-Z(tm). Obviously, you figured that out from its way cool name Mini-X(tm). However, it does not have a single part from our well-known Mini-Z(tm). If the mini car is a 1:24th scale class category. Then, Sun Sun Model(r) just upped the ante, the Mini-X(tm) is the new benchmark of the 1:24th scale car and it brings this class category to a new level of fun.

Build and Construction:
The Mini-X(tm) is not gas engine power and it will not fly with wings. However, there is no exaggeration that Mini-X(tm) is an innovated mini car with the concept in mind from their Xpress(tm) 1:10th scale model. For its appearance, it is generally the same as a normally 1:10th scale R/C car, but in a 1:24th scale – Plastic chassis, antenna tube and four slick/tread striptires. After removing the plastic chassis, you will find that it is really a great design. All parts are assembled with great care and detail. Four independent suspension arms, slick tires or tread strip tires. The motor is positioned in the center for good balance front and rear. Also, features a front and rear ball differential gear, camber adjustment, 4 AAA battery compartment, floating steering bar, strong mini-servo, power ESC and long distance RF 27MHz radio.

At this moment, can you imagine what the Mini-X(tm) looks like? Let’s have a quick look:

Clamber Structure   Different Tire thread

Front wheel bearing loc  Mini-X ESC

The provided motor is a 70 (Turns) and comes with a long shaft to link the front and rear gear. The generic ball differential design is similar to all 1:10th scale up, but it is tiny! They are made of 8 (2mm diameter) steel differential balls sandwiched between 2 steel plates and 8 (1.5mm diameter) small pressure balls for the compensation of tightness balancing. Motor and gear (8 pitches) combination is simple and clear because it is direct drive motor to the gear of ball differential (select 34, 35 and 36 pitches) in both front and rear. Very simple and direct layout. Optional one-way ball differential will be available. 4 wheel Independent suspension system: Four points designed with rod bar compensation. The dog-bone transmission allows the free moment of each suspension unit. The degree of hardness of each unit can be adjusted by different combination of spring set. Just like the bigger cars! There are two sub-functions from the front of suspension system which are the degree of camber and 2 cluster modes exchange. A 2 cluster mode coarse tuning effects the response of the steering, allowing a wider steering angle. Believe it or not Mini-X(tm) can make 60cm circles.

All electronics are optionally included. The Radio Receiver is using the standard amplitude modulation at 27 MHz frequency band. There are two channels – steering servo and ESC. The receiving range is up at around 50 ft or 15m. The receiver is able to suppress the unexpected bad signal influence and result from the purpose of protection. The Mini-X(tm) can have a wide operating range from 4.8V to 7.2V and the maximum current is 10A. It is programmable to calibrate with different model of AM Radio system. The calibration procedures are full throttle, full brake and Neutral” and it is performed by the assistance of both LEDs indication and Single touch control. The size of battery should be any AAA type. Mini-X is capable to be powered by 4 batteries or 6 batteries. Currently there are two soft plastic chassis available. They are similar to Toyota supra and Toyota corolla. Therefore, racer can design your own patterns with different paint and provided sticker. Another great feature of Mini-X(tm) is most 1:24th scale model cars can fit with minor modifications. Let your imagination go wild!

Front Wheel Parts Brake down

The down side to the Mini-X(tm) is the top speed gives up a little for mid-range power and acceleration and all the mechanical parts may cause some additional vibration and become the electric equivalent to a power hog. All this means more power consumption and more maintenance for car. The unique front one-way ball differential can get expensive, 6 battery charger is not common for AAA size.

The Mini-X(tm) configuration allows smooth acceleration and great response going in and out of corners with the right amount of torque to all the wheels. What better way to get all that power to the ground than having an independent suspension and 4 wheel drive? And if it is not to your liking you can adjust the pressure screw to your style of driving and or change the springs. Same goes for the steering, it has adjustable camber angle. The Mini-X(tm) – Simple and direct, and it is important that the price is low, and AAA battery can be found from anywhere!

Review and Test Drive:
Basically, Mini-X is very different from any mini R/C cars available in the market. The independent suspension system replaces the popular H-plate design to assist the steering condition. Firmness can be achieved by adjusting the hardness of spring instead of hardness of H-plate offering a higher amount of variables in track conditions. The Independent suspension design helps the mini-X run in most surfaces with good performance. No ride height rings are necessary. The height of car body can be adjusted by simply adjusting the screw at the bottom piece of suspension arm. With the integration with front and rear ball differential system, maximum traction of 4WD becomes possible. The front suspension system is not only responsible for its basic function of independent suspension, but the degree of camber and cluster can be adjusted in a very neat way. These two sub-functions can combine to make a wider range of steering response. The center of gravity of the car set is relatively lower than any mini-cars. This can be obvious found from the placement of battery, motor, ESC and Receiver. The factory ESC is powerful enough to drive a wider range of motor without damage. The strong and reliable radio foundation allows Mini-X to be played in any areas.

In other words, Mini-X can run in a high speed in a wider condition.

Focus:
Mini-X is really the most innovated design to the 1:24 scale. No matter if you are a beginner in R/C car or a skilled racer, all can find the joy of playing this mini-X without any hassles. Although it is compact design, it consists of full features of 1:10 scale models. Beginner can get start with this R/C kit easily with a lower entry cost. Skilled racer can practice their skills with this portable mini-X at anywhere and anytime. Owing to the factors of its compact size and wide range of running surface, it becomes possible to run Mini-X at home.

General setup and maintenance procedure:
– A suitable tire should be installed depending on the different surface condition in order to achieve the best traction.
– Bearing should be oiled from time to time.
– Shaft ring should be fitted to fill the gap over 0.5mm in order to achieve the best stability.
– Different strength of spring should be applied depending on different track condition such as angle of corner, number of corner and full speed portion.
– It would be the best to keep the center of gravity down in order to increase the stability in all condition.
– Motor should be cleaned with proper solvent

The inner space between the two front suspension arms on both sides must be increased. This can be done by the following procedures:
– Setup the front wheel with your expected camber angle.
– Mark the position ball head position for the camber purpose.
– Remove the pin.
– Unplug the top A-arm with the ball head.
– Choose a suitable file to rough the surface including hex ball head towards the dog bone.

The abrasion should be stopped if the front independent suspension can move freely through the whole course of the damping range.

Larger Clamber angle Long motor shaft n motor

Overview of 2 cluster mode Rear part

The ball differential must be setup properly with the following procedures, otherwise, it will result the problem of insufficient steering and slow response turning into a corner.
– Open the front and rear ball differential gear by unscrewing the screw inside.
– Face the front of the mini-x
– Unscrew the pin screws above the ball differential
– Put the ball differential out with the 8mm X 12 mm bearing
– Unscrew the screw on the inside the long tube
– Put grease onto each ball holes, low to medium viscous type are recommended.
– Reassemble it back by screwing in real slow
– Check the tightness from time to time
– Stop screw in when it JUST starts differential when gentle force applied on one side.
– Ball differential slippery is not a concern.

After having finished the front differential, adjust the rear with the similar procedure. However, it should stop screwing in only when it is slight more than JUST starting differential.

Furthermore, mini-x has also taken care to model car collection! It is flexible enough to turn all static models to live because Mini-X is a true 1:24 scale and it can be well fitted with different chassis at minimal modification in a lower price, but more options.

REDRC: Xpress brand to make a return

Back in the day when electric touring cars had slotted chassis for NiCD cells and drivetrains with ball differentials and high layshafts, the Xpress Pro touring car was one of the kits to beat. The iconic tourer featured a complex 4-link front suspension with step-less adjustable caster and camber settings, comparable to today’s Awesomatix car, as well as as central servo mount with direct links to the steering knuckles and it also featured a huge red anodised aluminium rear bulkhead and motor mount. The brand had a successful yet rather short life, although their 1/10th mini touring car had a certain following afterwards, but it will make a comeback in 2016 with four new on-road kits. No detailed information are available yet but the line will divide into the Xpresso and Road Runner series of cars and it is understood that both “full-size” as well as mini 1/10th touring cars will be part of the line-up. More information to follow.

Xpresso K1 Chassis Preview!

Introducing Our Xpresso K1 which will be in the form of a "K-Chassis", the first car released as part of our four-car release this year. You must be wondering what is this new "K-Chassis"? K-Cars or Kei-Car are a type of small car which fits into the lowest automotive tax bracket and we have based this K-Chassis on this branch of automotive car!

The Idea of this car came when the Xpress development team were bashing M-Chassis cars around and suddenly one of their friends brought out a Tamiya WR-02 and an idea came into their minds: "What if we designed a chassis which would be able to accept these bodies? At the start it was just trying to fit these bodies on all sorts of M-Chassis's but found out it was too much hassle when compared to redesigning a new car! This resulted in the creation of the Xpresso K1!

*Please note that all photos below of our Xpresso K1 chassis are of prototype. You can expect minor changes when compared to the release model.

The Concept seemed like all fun and games at the start, however due to the small body size, designing and building a chassis which would fit everything with no compromises was one of the problems faced by the development team. However, after countless prototypes and brainstorming sessions, the team was able to solve the problem. Everything was tucked neatly making use of every millimeter available on the chassis whilst keeping the use of common electronics used on most 1/10 models (i.e. servo, motor, esc). We recommend running this car with 13.5T Blinky for the perfect balance between Speed and Control!

Here is a comparison between the wheelbase of the Xpress Xpresso K1 (Closest), Xpress Mini Road Runner 2 (MRR2) AWD M-Chassis (In the middle) and the Legendary Road Runner Touring Car (Furthest Away).

The Future we have laid ahead will include a body that we will create to suit this chassis which will act as an extra choice to the bodies already available. As seen in the photos, even with the limited room, there will be a future upgrade of Anti-Rollbars, which will fit snugly inside the suspension system. With a simple Ackermann change on the steering block you will get a high steering angle required for RWD drifting! Speaking of drift, we will release tires with formula specific to RWD drifting.

Features: Simple Steering geometry change for easy transformation to RWD drift car. 12mm Hex for mounting M-Chassis sized wheels. Integrated Servo Mount in front bulkhead. Adjustable car geometry with link length adjustments Suitable for long and shorty packs with included battery mounts. Adjustable shock mounts to run 50mm length shocks. Internal Ratio of 1.9, with 39t sized diff pullies. Will come with Aluminum Rear Universals Full Carbon Lower Chassis, lower deck and lower arms. Parallel Topdeck for high on-power grip towards the rear wheels. Motor mount allows for a Large Tuning Window for different gear ratios. Front and Rear Adjustable Downstop through normal M3 Screw. Front and Rear Adjustable Downstop through normal M3 Screw.

Xpresso K1 K-Chassis Design Updates!

In the never stopping world of R/C, we here at Xpress wish to bring to everyone the best possible product. So between where we released some prototype images of the car till now, the development team have brought several upgrades to the Xpresso K1!

1

2 For the steering, we moved the steering links back behind the wheel axle line, by doing this it allowed us to improve the steering geometry and made room in the front to run a larger range of bodies!10 Another added benefit of moving the steering linkage to a more backwards position added the possibility of making room to install a anti-roll bar setup without hindering with the front bumper. With further testing, we found that due to the nature of the bodies that this car will run, the center of gravity was too high. Without anti-roll bars, the car was prone to rolling over, so a solution was needed to deal with this.3 4 The suspension geometry has been tweaked and redesigned to allow for easier adjustment. The original design of the top link was deemed too difficult to set by the design team, so this resulted in a re-designed top camberlink. 5 The shock body previously presented was too thick and restricted shock angle adjustments, so this redesigned shock body has been slimmed down from the previous version. 7 8 The rear end was largely kept the same besides the addition of an anti rollbar mount, with the front suspension components being moved to the rear as it made the suspension easier to adjust. 9

    Xpress Xpresso-K1
    Written by : KK Chung @ 2016.09.01
    Source: http://www.rc-magazine.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=320

    O-Ring
